Classes with Safiya..
No dance form generates more mystery, curiosity or interest than raqs sharki, better known in America as bellydance. The product of women’s wisdom traditions that go back to the dawn of human culture, modern bellydance has evolved into an immensely rich and diverse dance form thanks to infusion s of elements from the many cultures which participated in its creation: Roma (Gypsy), Indian, Persian, Greek/Balkan, Turkish, Arabic , North African.
This timeless dance form puts us in direct communicatin with our forgotten feminie self, empowers us and strengthen and tones our bodies. In Safiya’s classes you will learn the core movements and traditional rhythms, train your ear to hear the music, get strong and discover your inner goddess! Finger cymbals and veils are used. The style is traditional, both Turkish and Arabic, what Safiya calls “good, old-fashioned belydance” with emphasis on clean technique, musicality and self expression.

"There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it.
It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.
There is no satisfaction whatever, at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more allive than the others."
– Martha Graham to Agnes de Mille
